Geraint Thomas Out of the Giro d’Italia 2020

Geraint Thomas withdraw from the Giro d’Italia after an unlucky crash which left him off the pace of the main contenders on Mont Etna. Thomas was riding in the neutralised zone on stage 3 when he rode over a stray water bottle as it rolled across the road. The team Ineos-Grenadier team leader hit the ground at high speed before rejoining the race and finishing the days stage.

“I was really up for starting today. I woke up and wanted to start with the boys and at least help them go for stages over the next few days”

Ahead of stage 4 a scan revealed a minor fracture to his pelvis resulting in his withdrawal from the race. A devastated Thomas said “It’s so frustrating, I have put so much work into this race. I did everything I could and feel like I was in just as good, if not better shape, than when I won the Tour. I was feeling really good. So for it just to end like this this gutting”.

Thomas also add that the decision to leave the Giro d’Italia had been made easier due to the fracture, because he obviously didn’t want to do any more damage.
