The idea of this wonder route was conceived by the Touring Club Le France in 1903, with the completion of the Col d’Iseran the Route des Grandes Alpes was opened in 1937.

Described as the “world’s most beautiful road” the Route des Grandes Alpes stretches from the shores of beautiful Lake Geneva, the largest lake in Western Europe, to the bustling resort of Menton on the Côte d’Azur, crossing many of the highest, and most well-known alpine cols along the way.

The Route des Grandes Alpes Cycle Ride will involve some long days in the saddle, each day averaging around 100km and 2400m of climbing so a good level of fitness is required. Being in good physical condition will result in a more enjoyable holiday, for this reason we recommend partaking in a achievable fitness program prior to your cycling holiday.

Obviously, the best way to prepare is to get out on your bike and include some long rides in hilly terrain. However, swimming, running and circuit training are also good ways to develop your aerobic fitness and stamina.

You will be accommodated on a shared room basis whilst on the Route des Grandes Alpes Cycle Ride. Individuals travelling alone will be paired up with someone of the same gender.
